Cardboard Relief Artmaking Workshop
8.5x11”, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Poster designed for University Gallery’s cardboard relief workshop inspired by the work of artist Alan R. Atkins.
During my graphic design internship at University Galleries, I was tasked with designing an eye-catching flyer design for a cardboard relief artmaking workshop led by Alan Atkins. I was given a photograph from a previous exhibition of Alan’s and the only poster requirement was that this photograph was included within the design. I wanted to challenge myself to build off this the photo rather than have it be the focus, so I blew it up as the background and brought illustrative elements to the front to make the poster feel more friendly and inviting. I designed illustrative shapes, making sure to leave jagged edges so they seemed as though they were just cut out. I shaped the type for the title by hand, making sure to incorporate the same jagged edges as the rest of my design elements. I used clipping masks with cardboard textures to make all my “cardboard” pieces feel more realistic and added in a cutting mat and tools as the final touch. I wanted the poster to not only catch the viewer’s eye, but also give them a clear idea of what “cardboard relief” crafts might look, since not all people attending the workshop may be regularly involved in the art world.
